Emotional Intelligence

What is Emotional Intelligence?

Emotional Intelligence (EI) is defined as ones ability to understand the thoughts and feelings of self and others, using this in a way that creates better relationships, higher performance and a more fulfilled life.

High levels of EI has been shown to be extremely valuable. Research suggests that EI accounts for over 65% of success in leadership roles, is the biggest determining factor in whether someone is defined as a high performer and most importantly is associated with someone living a life of success, meaning and purpose.

The Four Components of Emotional Intelligence

  1. Self Awareness: an ability to understand your own thoughts, feelings and behaviours, how you are seen by others, your strengths and your weaknesses

  2. Self Management: an ability to manage your thoughts, feelings and behaviours in a way that serves you and the environment you are in

  3. People Awareness: an ability to understand the thoughts, feelings and behaviours of other individuals and understand that we all have different maps of the world

  4. People Management: an ability to manage people by stepping into another individuals map of the world and using this to positively influence and come to mutual commitment

Those individuals in life who have a high level of self awareness and awareness of others can not only more effectively navigate their own lives but can orient their life in a way that inspires others to follow.

When you are fully aware of you and what makes you happy, and can mange this effectively, you have the foundation to give, communicate and lead with purpose. Your emotional intelligence is the foundation for every behaviour and decision you will ever make in your life. It is the very essence of who you are!
